Acorn Giving

When you think of philanthropists, you probably think of the rich and famous. Well, think again. Through the Community Foundation's Acorn Giving program, you have the opportunity to build a charitable legacy that will have a long-term impact on your community.

Acorn Funds build charitable endowments much the same way individuals build retirement plans: through regular contributions invested for growth and income. However, there are some significant differences:

  • Contributions to Acorn Funds are tax deductible.
  • Donations to an Acorn Fund build a grant-making fund over time.
  • Acorn Funds give forever!

The Community Foundation of Switzerland County, Inc. recognizes there are families and agencies who would like to create a legacy for themselves and their community but are not in the position to give all at once the $5,000 (or $10,000 for scholarships) minimum required to establish an endowed fund. The Acorn Fund concept will allow donors to grow their fund to $5,000 over a period of time. Donors name their own fund- for an individual, a family, a particular cause, or for the benefit of a nonprofit organization- with an initial donation of $500.

Donors then make annual, tax-deductible contributions of at least $500 and payments can be made annually, quarterly ($125 per quarter), or monthly ($42 per month). Contributions may be made via personal check, direct bank account withdrawal, stock gift, or online giving. While the fund is growing, Foundation administrative fees are waived in order to maximize growth. When contributions reach $5,000, the Acorn Fund matures to a permanent endowment and will begin awarding grants.

By establishing an Acorn Fund with the Community Foundation, you create a vehicle for permanent and perpetual giving to causes important to you. These causes will receive support far into the future from the acorn that you plant today.
